What a great experience spending a weekend with Tony Newton! We hosted a bass workshop yesterday with Tony in the lead, talking about Motown, James Jamerson, but mostly he spoke about how to improve your chances at being picked out for great gigs, and for becoming the best musician you can be. Truly inspiring stuff. it’s quite something to have a living legend share with us all real stuff that truly went on during the moments in history that he was involved with. We are talking about a man who played on over 100 major hits, and not just Motown stuff. Names like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Garry Moore, Tony Williams, the list goes on and on! Thanks again to Tony for being so gracious and helpful to my students and friends.
I think I can speak for everyone who attended that they all got some great information, and they were entertained and inspired. I have a lot to be grateful for. I had a successful workshop with Motown legend Tony Newton this past weekend. My 68 Fender Jazz bass now has extra good mojo on it. I let Motown Legend Tony Newton use it for my whole workshop last weekend. He hardly picked up his six-string at all. Love You bro, you made everyone’s weekend a little better! – Scott Goldberg, Newton Bass Workshop Host! Oct. 31, 2021, San Jose, CA.

“Tony’s workshop was so interesting and informative, even for me as a drummer. He spoke about groove and pocket in a way that spoke to me as the other half of the rhythm section. One of the parts that stood out to me was when he played the same lick in ten different grooves. It really showcased his point on how you can take something simple and make it sound so different. It was a pleasure and an honor to share space with him, absorb his stories and expand my knowledge as a musician. Thank you, Tony!” – Sean Donohue

“I almost skipped the event, yet, I opted on attending. It’s perhaps the best decision I’ve taken in terms of embarking my own musical journey. Learning music theory is a daunting task to tackle on your own. However, Tony Newton helped me uncover an unknown potential, that being the ability to unlock the mind through implementing a technique of canceling negative thoughts. Aside from this, He keenly taught the whole group awesome bass guitar techniques that no other book will teach you, all pared with amazing anecdotes from his extensive touring career. The man is not just a prolific musician but also a spiritual teacher! Thank You, Tony Newton” – Isaac Gutierrez

“I wasn’t going to attend as I’m a guitar player who plays some bass, but I’m super glad I changed my mind and went. Tony was amazing, super interesting to listen to and he has a wealth of knowledge that served me and would serve any musician, not just a bass player. Thank You Tony and Scott! It was well worth it.”- Dan Gorrell

Tony’s workshop is a must for any fan of Motown and James Jamerson. And of course, every bass player should be! Tony’s experience and insights into the magic of that sound, feel, and style is one of a kind. There’s nobody else on the planet who can give you that insiders view of what it must have been like during the heyday of Motown. – Barry Warsaw

Tony Newton’s class was very informative for me. Learning that the thought process and your attitude has as much to do as with learning the notes in the song itself and are critical to playing great lines. I would recommend this class to anyone that would like to improve their playing. – David Brown

As a bassist with decades of experience I really enjoyed Tony’s workshop. Tony brings a wealth of knowledge not only from his lifetime of playing with the greatest musicians but with his expertise on the bass and music theory. Tony takes his role as an educator seriously and imparts not only his experiences in the studio and on stage but many practical tips as well for all levels of players. – Gary Rosen
